Website Maintenance Services for Small Business | Contact Worcco Now

Launching your website is just the first step. Without regular website maintenance, your site can suffer from broken forms, dropped search rankings, or security issues. Here is our checklist for small businesses.

Website is very necessary in these days for all kinds of business, and Website Maintenance is also important to grow your business online.

Let me tell you the single most common mistake I see small business owners make. You spend 3 months, endless meetings, way more money than you budgeted, and a whole lot of stress launching your brand new website. You hit go. You post about it on LinkedIn. You pop a beer. And then you completely forget it exists.

Six months later you get an email from a customer saying your contact form is broken. A year later Google drops your rankings overnight for no obvious reason. Two years later you wake up to find your entire website is redirecting to a scam pharmacy.

And every single one of these problems could have been prevented with regular, boring, unglamorous website maintenance.

Website maintenance is the most underrated, undervalued part of running a business online. Nobody talks about it. Nobody budgets for it. And almost every small business pays the price for that eventually.

Websites Don't Just Sit There. They Rot.

Here's the big lie everyone believes about websites: once you build it, it stays built.

That was maybe true in 1999. It has not been true for 25 years.

A modern website is not a static brochure. It's a piece of software running on top of 50 different other pieces of software, all of which are being updated, patched, and changed every single week. WordPress core updates. Plugin updates. Theme updates. PHP updates. Server updates. Security patches. Browser updates. Google algorithm updates.

If none of those things get updated on your end? Your website doesn't just stay the same. It slowly breaks. One tiny piece at a time.

First a button stops working on Safari. Then the contact form stops sending emails. Then the load speed gets slower and slower. Then Google stops ranking you. Then one day you get hacked.

And the worst part? Almost none of this is visible to you. You check your homepage once a month, it looks fine, and you assume everything is working. Meanwhile 30% of mobile visitors can't submit your form, and you have no idea.

This is the silent cost of skipping website maintenance. You don't get a bill for it. You don't get an alert. You just slowly lose customers, leads and rankings over the course of months, and you never connect the dots.

What Actually Happens When You Skip Website Maintenance?

I have seen every single one of these happen to a small business client in the last 12 months:

  • A local plumber ran a $1500 Google Ads campaign, and got zero leads. Their contact form had been broken for 3 weeks.
  • An eCommerce store lost 40% of their organic traffic overnight after Google penalised them for an outdated security certificate.
  • A startup had their entire website go down on launch day for their biggest feature update ever.
  • A restaurant had their menu page hacked, and it stayed that way for 11 days before anyone noticed.

None of these were complicated problems. None of them cost thousands of dollars to fix. Every single one of them would have been caught and prevented by standard, routine website maintenance.

And this is not just for WordPress sites. Even custom built sites, Webflow sites, Shopify stores, and products built around SaaS design all require regular upkeep. SaaS design in particular creates unique maintenance requirements, because your marketing website is tightly integrated with your product, and a single broken link or outdated API can break the entire user onboarding flow.

The WordPress Maintenance Checklist: What Actually Needs To Be Done?

If you go searching for a WordPress maintenance checklist online you will find 100 different versions, most of which are either wildly overcomplicated or completely useless.

After doing this work for almost a decade, this is the actual WordPress maintenance checklist that we use for every single one of our small business clients. Nothing extra, nothing missing.

Weekly Tasks

  1. Run all core, plugin and theme updates
  2. Test the contact form and all primary CTAs
  3. Run a malware and security scan
  4. Check uptime for the last 7 days
  5. Clear and optimize the website cache

Monthly Tasks

  1. Update and test all payment gateways and integrations
  2. Run a broken link scan
  3. Review Core Web Vitals and load speed
  4. Optimize the website database
  5. Take a complete, off-site backup of the entire website

Quarterly Tasks

  1. Test the full website across all major browsers and devices
  2. Review and update website content for accuracy
  3. Check for compatibility issues with upcoming WordPress updates
  4. Audit SEO fundamentals and search console health
  5. Test all third party integrations and APIs

That's it. That's the full WordPress maintenance checklist. It takes between 1 and 4 hours a month depending on the size and complexity of your site. And doing this consistently will prevent 99% of all the common website problems that ruin small business owners' weekends.

You will notice there is nothing on this list about adding new content, writing blog posts, or making design changes. That's not website maintenance. That's marketing. Maintenance is the boring, invisible work that keeps the lights on.

Why Small Business Owners Keep Ignoring This

I talk to small business owners every week about this, and I always hear the same three excuses:

  1. "My website is fine, I checked it last month"
  2. "I don't have the budget for this"
  3. "I can just do it myself"

Let's break these down honestly.

First: "My website is fine". 9 times out of 10 when someone says this, I can find three broken things on their site within 5 minutes. Most things that break on a website don't break on the homepage on desktop. They break on inner pages, on mobile, on specific browsers, or on parts of the site you never visit.

Second: "I don't have the budget". Let's be really clear about this. Good website maintenance for a standard small business website costs between $50 and $150 a month. That is less than most people spend on coffee. And it will prevent you from losing thousands of dollars in wasted ad spend, lost leads and broken sales. It is quite literally the highest ROI investment you can make in your business online.

Third: "I can just do it myself". You can. Technically. Almost anyone can work their way through the WordPress maintenance checklist. But here's the thing: you won't. You have a business to run. You have 100 other things on your to-do list. This will fall to the bottom. And then three months will pass, and you will remember you haven't done it, and then something will break.

I have never met a small business owner who consistently kept up with their own website maintenance for more than 6 months. Never. Not one. It is always the first thing that gets dropped when things get busy.

DIY vs Freelancer vs Agency: Which Is Right For You?

So you've decided you need to get this handled. What are your options?

Do It Yourself

✅ Cheapest option
❌ You will almost certainly stop doing it
❌ You won't know what to do when an update breaks something

Good for brand new startups with literally zero budget, and only as a temporary measure.

Hire A Freelancer

✅ Usually cheaper than an agency
✅ Flexible
❌ Reliability is a coin flip
❌ No backup if they get sick, go on holiday, or ghost you
❌ Most freelancers will not take responsibility if something breaks

Good if you already have a freelancer you trust completely, and they have explicit availability for maintenance work.

Work With An Agency

  • Consistent, reliable process
  • Someone is on call 24/7 if something breaks
  • They take responsibility for problems
  • They know what to look for that you and most freelancers will miss
  • More expensive than the other options

For any established small business that depends on their website for leads or sales, this is almost always the best option long term.

Red Flags In Bad Website Maintenance Services

Unfortunately there are a lot of terrible website maintenance services out there. A lot of them charge $300 a month and do literally nothing except run updates once a month.

Watch out for these red flags:

  • They won't send you a detailed report of what work was done each month
  • They lock you into 12-month contracts with no exit clause
  • They charge extra for fixing things that break as a result of updates
  • Their pricing is wildly above or below the $50-$200 a month range for small business sites
  • They try to upsell you on 10 other services every single month

Good website maintenance is boring. It is unexciting. A good provider will email you once a month, say "everything is working fine, here is what we did", and that's it. You should almost never hear from them. If you are hearing from them every week trying to sell you something, that's a bad sign.

How Much Should This Actually Cost?

Let's end the mystery around pricing. This is what fair pricing for website maintenance looks like in 2025, for small businesses:

  • Very simple 5 page brochure website: $49 - $79 / month
  • Standard small business website with blog and contact forms: $79 - $129 / month
  • eCommerce store under 500 products: $129 - $199 / month
  • Custom website or marketing site for SaaS design: $199 - $299 / month

Anything above that for a standard small business site is almost certainly overcharging. Anything significantly below that is cutting corners somewhere.

You will notice there is no $29 a month option. Anyone offering website maintenance for $29 a month is running 500 sites on autopilot, and will not notice if your site breaks until you call them screaming.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, website maintenance is just peace of mind.

It's knowing that when you spend $1000 on ads next week, your contact form will actually work. It's knowing that your website won't go down on a Saturday night when you are on holiday. It's knowing that you won't wake up one morning to find all your rankings are gone.

It's the most boring investment you will ever make in your business. And it is also the one that will save you more stress, more time and more money than any other single thing you can do.

Most small business owners only learn this lesson the hard way. They wait until something breaks badly, and then they finally decide to get maintenance sorted. You don't have to be one of them.
